Marine Plywood Indonesia – This special plywood has layers that are held together with a waterproof adhesive, allowing the wood to withstand direct contact with water. Marine plywood is an ideal wood for wet conditions.
This type of plywood is often used to build boats, boat parts, or outdoor furniture in coastal areas. By sealing the wood properly, you are able to increase the life of the plywood and make it last for years to come.
Mega Plywood Indonesia will share some tips on how and what to use when sealing marine plywood.
Materials
Before starting, gather the following materials:
- Acetone
- Soft cloth
- Sandpaper
- Clear, translucent epoxy
- Foam brush or roller
How to seal plywood:
1.Clean the surface
The first step is to dip a soft cloth in liquid acetone, then wipe the wood surface. This is useful for removing oil or other stains. Let the acetone liquid dry completely for 1-2 hours before you move on to the next step.
2.Sand the Wood
Like any other type of plywood, you still need to sand the marine plywood before you seal or paint it. Look and check both sides of the wood, including the edges, trying not to miss any sandpaper. Use 80-grit sandpaper, first removing all dust and particles with a soft cloth.
3.Apply the First Layer
Since marine plywood is usually used underwater, it should be possible to treat every surface of the wood with an additional sealant. Epoxy is clear and translucent because it works deep into the wood, dries transparent, and requires less maintenance than other types of sealants. It is also possible to use marine grade sealers, but they will require more coats and every 3 to 4 years must be reapplied.
It’s easy just dip a foam brush or roller into the liquid sealant. Then apply it to the plywood area, starting at the top and side edges, then moving to the front face. Allow the epoxy to dry completely before turning it over and applying it to the bottom and back edges of the wood.
4.Add Additional Layers
Marine plywood is thicker than regular plywood, so you need to apply more layers to maximize its lifespan. A good rule of thumb is to add as many layers of sealant as there is plywood. That means if your plywood has 7 layers of wood, you should add 7 layers of sealant. Look out for scuffed wood, sand lightly between each coat for maximum adhesion, and make sure to dust off before adding the next coat. Still not sure which type of wood to use on your next project?
